Walid Joumblatt joined the ranks of those promoting the October 17 uprising as a conspiracy driven by “international and local media machines.” He also referred to the uprising as “events,” outdoing Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah –– who describes it as a “movement” –– in his contempt for it. In his speech at the Progressive Socialist Party’s 44th conference on Sunday, Joumblatt failed to mention martyr Alaa Abou Fakhr, a member of his own party who was killed on November 12, 2019. Alaa was one of the party members who supported the uprising and rejected Joumblatt’s feudalism.
