On the 5th anniversary of the Beirut port explosion, the Lebanese government honored the victims and martyrs of the crime by inaugurating a street in the port area named after them. For the first time, the government officially participated in commemorative events, after previous administrations had protected the defendants in the investigation. In addition to naming the street “August 4 Victims Street,” the Minister of Culture issued a decision yesterday to add the port silos to the general inventory of historic monuments, which means no restoration, alteration, or demolition may be carried out on the structure without prior approval from the Directorate General of Antiquities. This move secures the protection of a building that has become the most powerful witness to the explosion and a vital part of the city’s collective memory.
