Jumblatt: Suwayda is an integral part of Syria The leadership of Lebanon’s Druze community condemned the recent violence in Suwayda Governorate, including the killings and retaliations between Druze factions and other Arab tribes. They called for calm, a ceasefire, and reconciliation. Following an extraordinary meeting of the Druze Religious Council’s General Assembly in Beirut today, former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt expressed hope that “the people of the mountain [Jabal al-Druze] would not tarnish the legacy of Sultan Pasha al-Atrash.” Jumblatt also demanded the formation of an investigative committee to uncover the crimes committed “against our people in Suwayda and the Bedouins.” He urged an end to incitement and mobilization campaigns, and called on the Syrian government to act swiftly to contain tensions in the Suwayda region.
