Cuba has become the most progressive country in Latin America in terms of social rights, after the results of the official referendum on the new family code were announced yesterday. The new family code legalizes same-sex marriage, and allows same-sex adoption, surrogate pregnancies, and greater rights to non-biological parents. More than two-thirds of Cuban respondents voted in favor of the new code, which defined marriage as "the union of two people" without specifying gender, and which strengthened the rights of children, the elderly, and people with special needs. 74% of about 8.4 million Cubans eligible to vote took part in the referendum. Mariela Castro, daughter of former Cuban president Raul Castro, led the campaign to defend LGBTQ+ rights, to erase the decades of persecution following the victory of the Cuban revolution, when homosexuals were forced into labor camps or deported to Miami.
