French archeologists found tombs and a sarcophagus that date back to the 14th century under the floors of Notre Dame in Paris, during restoration work following the fire that engulfed the cathedral in 2019. On Monday night, the French Ministry of Culture announced that the tombs revealed remains of "remarkable scientific quality" and included a "completely preserved, human-shaped sarcophagus made of lead." He noted that the findings could contribute to a greater understanding of medieval burial rites. Archaeologists also found several sculptures, including a pair of sculpted hands, the bust of a bearded man, and some sculpted natural shapes that still retain their original paint.
