Municipal Elections Begin in the North and Akkar The second round of municipal and mayoral elections began today, Sunday, in the North and Akkar governorates. Voting will continue until 7 PM across the districts of Akkar, Tripoli, Zgharta, Bcharre, Minieh-Danniyeh, Koura, and Batroun. The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) documented numerous violations during the vote, including logistical issues, voter intimidation, heightened sectarian rhetoric, and breaches of both ballot secrecy and electoral silence, including by officials and MPs, among them Gebran Bassil, Tony Frangieh, and Najib Mikati. According to LADE, security forces also arrested several individuals suspected of offering electoral bribes and confiscating voter IDs. Voter turnout across the seven districts ranged from 11% to 32%, according to the Ministry of Interior. LADE’s initial report on the second round also noted that 85 municipalities secured victories uncontested.
