On Sunday, the Sudanese went to the streets for the "July 17 March of Millions" to demand the restoration of civilian rule. The military beat protestors gathered near the presidential palace and fired tear gas at them, after closing off roads leading to the army headquarters with concrete blocks the day before. Yesterday's march, which is part of broader action against the military coup, is the first demonstration held after the formation of the unified Revolutionary Council on July 7, which brings together more than 20 Sudanese parties and professional unions to coordinate street movements and political action. The council was established as General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who led the power grab, announced that the army would make way for a civilian government, provided he lead a higher council of the armed forces. Civilians consider this "an overt maneuver." With people on the street remaining steadfast and refusing the maneuvers of the putschists, the military decided to ignite tribal and ethnic conflicts, trying to force the Sudanese to choose between their rule or civil strife.
