On the 55th anniversary of Barbados’ independence from British colonialism, the island officially broke its ties with the British monarchy on Tuesday, to become the world’s newest republic. President Sandra Mason was sworn in at a ceremony in the presence of Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Prince Charles, officially replacing Queen Elizabeth II as the country’s head of state. In a symbolic move, the new republic flag was raised, and the Royal Standard flag representing the Queen was lowered. Barbados held presidential elections last October in preparation for its separation from the monarchy, after Mason, the country’s former Governor-General, announced the constitutional separation from the U.K. With this step, Barbados will have rid itself of the remnants of British imperialism, after it suffered from two centuries of slavery and gained its independence on November 30, 1966.
