Iraqi leader Muqtada al-Sadr announced today that he is quitting politics, in response to the government formation deadlock that has plagued the country since October 2021, despite al-Sadr's party winning a parliamentary majority. The announcement led thousands of al-Sadr's supporters to storm several presidential and government buildings. At least 3 people died as security forces attempted to quell the demonstrations by declaring a curfew, and pro-Iranian Coordination Framework militias fired live bullets into the crowds. Al-Sadr's supporters began their protests in late July, during which they surrounded the parliament, to prevent it from holding a session to elect a new president or to elect the Coordination Framework candidate, former minister Muhammad Sudani, as prime minister.
