The Ukrainian ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, attacked his Russian counterpart, calling Russia's successive military campaigns in Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014, and the current campaign in Ukraine a "Kremlin virus." Kyslytsya insisted on "Ukraine's right to individual and collective self-defense" but added that the country is "committed to a peaceful and diplomatic path." He demanded that Russia withdraw its troops from Lugansk and Donetsk provinces. Kyslytsya's comments came during a UN emergency Security Council meeting on Monday, hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the two provinces, using it as a pretext to deploy "peacekeeping" troops at the request of separatist leaders. Several countries have expressed their intention to impose economic sanctions on Russia.
