The Kenyan women workers protesting in front of their country’s consulate demanded holding the consulate staff responsible, for failing to hold their employers (or “sponsors”) accountable, after the latter confiscated passports of workers wishing to go home to Kenya. The women also called for changing the honorary consul and vice consul –– who are both Lebanese –– and appointing Kenyans instead. The workers’ resentment against the consulate intensified following its delay in granting visas to many of the Kenyan women who had already paid the required amount of money to travel. The U.N’s International Organization for Migration secured visas for around twenty of the women, while the rest await their turn.
