On Thursday night, the book stand of homeless Mohammad Al-Mughrabi under the Fiat bridge in Beirut was devastated by fire, six days after the Culture Minister Mohammad Mortada visited him. Al-Mughrabi topped social media this week as a homeless bookseller of Egyptian descent who lives off aid and by selling books under the bridge. The state dealt with Al-Mughrabi not as a homeless person but as a “practitioner of culture in its highest manifestations,” according to the Minister of Culture, who gave Al-Mughrabi more books but did not secure a shelter for him.
