During his weekly intervention on the program "Sar El Wa2et," George Ghanem upended all economic literature about how banks and large depositors profited from the stabilization of the exchange rate. After arguing last Thursday that low-income people profited the most from 30 years of BDL financial policies, Ghanem declared this week that the middle class, which developed after the Civil War, was nothing but the product of Riad Salameh's policies. In his shameless praise of the BDL governor, Ghanem offered an inverted image of the Lebanese economy. He argued that large depositors financed the lives of all residents and that the financial engineering “brought money into the country,” the same large depositors who garnered huge profits and the same financial engineering that transferred depositors’ money to the BDL, which then squandered it. Ghanem ended his 15 minutes by ridiculing the prosecution of Salameh on charges of money laundering and smuggling.
