In an interview with SkyNews Sports today, Nasser al-Khater, Chief Executive Officer of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, announced that his country welcomes LGBTQ+ fans who are coming to Doha to watch the competition, and that all those who will attend will feel safe. Journalist Rob Harris drilled the Qatari director about the protection of LGBTQ+ fans and their right to watch the World Cup and express themselves, but al-Khater repeated that everyone is welcome in Doha, and no one will bother anyone, in a message meant to reassure the LGBTQ+ community. Regarding the availability of alcohol, al-Khater said that drinking will be allowed in the designated areas around the stadiums, and that organizaing committee will set up special zones where drunken fans will be sent to sober up. Al-Khater refused to discuss the campaigns against Qatar demanding compensation and full rights for migrant workers, arguing that the tournament should not be turned into a platform for political demands.
