At dawn on Monday, Israeli bulldozers, police and army units raided the area, carrying out the largest displacement operation in #Jerusalem to date. While home demolitions have accelerated across the West Bank over the past two years, this is the first time a building of this size has been demolished in East Jerusalem. Israeli forces dispersed neighborhood residents with batons and stun grenades as they attempted to stop the demolition and show solidarity with the residents. The families had been scheduled to appear before an Israeli court at noon to review the demolition order, but the bulldozers moved in before the hearing. Israeli authorities claim the building was illegal, despite the fact that its residents have been seeking permits since 2011, when the building was first constructed, while the Israeli municipality continually refused to grant them.
