Talih Hamdan (1944-2025) The town of Ain Anoub (Aley District) today bid farewell to poet #TalihHamdan, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 81. Hamdan was the last of the poets from the “Zaghloul el-Damour” ensemble, which had brought Zajal and improvised poetry to Lebanese theaters and television since the 1960s. He joined the choir in 1965 and toured Lebanon with al-Zaghloul, Zain Shoaib and Edward Harb, performing in Zajal challenges and folklore events. Talih Hamdan formed the “al-Rabih” choir in 1976 during the civil war, bringing together poets Khalil Shahrour, Antoine Saadeh and Nazih Saab. Hamdan’s poetry reflected the course of the war, with verses dedicated to the Socialist Party and its battles. After the war, Hamdan reflected on his work and attributed the war’s tragedies to outdated mindsets. He then began writing about openness, peace and reconciliation. Hamdan released five poetry collections: “Bara’em Ward” (1990), “Jadawil Itr” (1995), “Layl w Qamar” (1999), “Entorini Ana Jayi” (2011) and “Iftitahiyat Talih Hamdan” (2014). He remained faithful to improvisation and Zajal until his final days.
