Jean Paul Belmondo, who grew up in the boxing ring, became a theater actor before moving to feature films, as his agility and muscular body seemed to be made for the camera. His face soon became synonymous with French cinema, which he devoted his life to, literally: he insisted on doing all the stunts himself in his action films. In addition to his dangerous side, Belmondo also had a romantic, handsome and feisty side that emerged in French New Wave films, of which he and Jean-Pierre Léaud were the biggest stars: from deceiving Jean Seberg in Paris in “A Bout de Souffle” (1960), his first film with French director Jean-Luc Godard, to convincing Anna Karina to escape the city and live together on a desert island in “Pierrot le Fou” (1965).
