On the 27th day of the Iranian uprising, schoolgirls in Shiraz called on citizens to take part in protests in their own way today. They tore up photographs of Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, and threw them on the streets for passersby to see and get inspired to join in. Protests intensified in Kurdish areas, with widespread commitment to a general strike. The regime responded by bringing in security reinforcements to further subdue protesters, fearing a broader wave of civil disobedience, especially with protests re-erupting in Qom and Mashahd, and continuing in Tehran. Iranian security forces had used teargas against the lawyers syndicate’s protest in the Kurdish city of Sanandaj.
