In defense of what remains of artistic and cultural freedoms At the invitation of workers in the arts and culture sector, a meeting was held today at Sunflower Theater in defense of freedoms in this field and in protest against recent attempts at repression. The gathering aimed to “sound the alarm over the growing campaigns of defamation, incitement and takfir.” The attendees published a statement representing 51 cultural institutions and spaces, signed by “artists, programmers, designers, researchers, and directors of cultural spaces, theaters, and artistic and research institutions.” In the statement, they called for resorting to the judiciary if there were any objections to an artistic work. This meeting follows a campaign of incitement and takfir against artist Hanan Hajj Ali on social media, sparked by an edited clip from her play “Jogging,” which she performed in Saida.
