The medicine cartel has managed to obstruct any attempt to encourage local production by influencing public policies and monopolizing the medicine market. The market remains dependent on imports by 80%, which led to an increase in prices and a medicine shortage, while also contributing to the Lebanese economy’s dependence on hard currencies. Local production of generic medicines is an alternative to import. It provides cheaper drugs, and also contributes to the development of local skills by reducing dependency on imports. Despite a slight increase in the proportion of locally manufactured drugs from the total consumption amid the current crisis, administrative obstructions and import companies’ monopoly remain obstacles to the development of this industry.
