The price of cement has skyrocketed by around 750% in recent months. Activists have so far failed to break up the quarry monopolies that the government has been reinforcing since 1993 when it first decided to ban the import of cement. This decision created a monopoly controlled by three companies, all of which are linked to a web of political actors that benefit at various stages; from the quarries and the crushers to the construction sector.
