On Saturday, he escalated his rhetoric by launching a campaign against “occupiers disguised as #refugees.” Bassil likened the Syrians currently in #Lebanon to the Syrian tutelage army that ruled the country until 2005, reviving the same militaristic vocabulary, branding them an “army,” describing their presence as an “occupation,” declaring a “state of emergency,” and framing it as a national duty to “liberate” Lebanon. Bassil listed the conspiracies he claims he and his movement have thwarted, from attempts to replace the Lebanese people with another population, to the alleged conspiracy that triggered the economic collapse of 2019. He also declared his readiness to ally with anyone in the municipal elections who supports a platform to “prevent Syrian refugees from eating the bread of the Lebanese people.” Bassil’s comments came on the twentieth anniversary of the Syrian army’s withdrawal from Lebanon, which the Free Patriotic Movement commemorated at Michel Murr Stadium. The #FPM sought to project the image of a “Christian condition,” united not only against the Syrians but also against other Lebanese Christian parties. The ceremony handed the microphone to former Lebanese Forces Vice President, lawyer Elie Aswad, and the Interior Secretary of the Tigers Party (Numur), Jean Eid, both of whom enthusiastically echoed Bassil’s rhetoric of hate.
