Sudan’s military forces carried out a coup at dawn on Monday, to oust the transitional government that was formed after the 2019 revolution, which toppled the rule of former President Omar al-Bashir. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was arrested by the army and placed under house arrest, before he was moved to an unknown location. A number of ministers from the transitional council, heads of political parties, and representatives of the revolution were also arrested, amid popular protests rejecting the coup. Last week, millions of protesters took to the streets to demand civilian rule in the country, weeks before the date of handing over power to civilians, according to the agreement signed in the wake of the 2019 revolution between the army and revolutionary forces.
