Megaphone spoke with Annemarie Jacir, the Palestinian director of Palestine 36, on the sidelines of the Marrakech International Film Festival. The film depicts the Palestinian revolt against British rule in 1936 through Yusuf, a young man caught between his daily life in a small village and the escalating turmoil in Jerusalem. The shortlist features 15 films from around the world, including Arab entries such as Iraq’s The President’s Cake. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released shortlists in 12 categories, including Best International Feature Film. The five final contenders for the award will be announced on January 22, 2026, ahead of the Oscars ceremony on March 15, 2026.
