Parliament lifts immunity of former Industry Minister Today, Lebanon’s parliament lifted the immunity of former Industry Minister Georges Bouchikian, accused of embezzling public funds, extortion and accepting bribes from factory owners in exchange for work permits during his term as minister in the previous government. The decision passed with 99 votes in favor, one opposing vote from MP Sajih Attieh and one abstention by MP Jamil al-Sayyed. According to media reports, Bouchikian, a Canadian citizen, fled to Canada just hours before the session. During the same session, parliament approved the referral of former Telecommunications Ministers Boutros Harb, Nicolas Sehnaoui and Jamal Jarrah to a parliamentary inquiry commission for alleged corruption and misuse of public funds. Parliament elected Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab, as well as MPs Ibrahim Moussawi and Ghada Ayoub, as permanent members of the committee.
