Amchit: Protect monk seal from extinction | «عمشيت لؤلؤة المتوسّط» لحماية فقمة الراهب من الانقراض https://video.megaphone.news/videos/watch/f5de9c61-cf2c-404c-8bb1-112a648f7117 لا تزال أمام فقمة الراهب فرصةٌ للاحتفاظ بمسكنها المهدّد على شاطئ عمشيت. فقد نفّذ أهالي المنطقة إلى جانب جمعيات بيئية، الأحد الفائت، وقفةً تحت شعار «عمشيت لؤلؤة المتوسّط» تأكيداً على ضرورة حماية «مغارة الفقمة» من الهدم. طالب الأهالي بتصنيف مغارات شاطئ عمشيت كمحمية طبيعية، فيما شدّد المهندس فريد أبي يونس على فرادة المنطقة وفرصة تطويرها كمعلمٍ سياحيّ متوسّطيّ، وذلك بعدما تقدّم بشكوى وقف أعمال بناء الفيلا الخاصّة في العقار 345 المحاذي للمغارة. يُذكَر أن الورشة التي تهدّد المغارة كانت قد توقّفت إلى حين دراسة أثرها البيئي، وأنّ «فقمة الراهب»- أكبر فقمات المتوسّط، مهدّدة بالانقراض وتقصد مغارات محدّدة على ضفاف المتوسّط للتكاثر، بينها «مغارة الفقمة» في عمشيت. Monk seals still have a chance to keep their threatened habitat on Amchit beach: residents of the area and environmental groups organized a protest last Sunday under the slogan “Amchit, the Mediterranean’s pearl,” to stress the need to protect the seal cave from destruction. Residents demanded that the caves of Amchit beach be classified as a natural environmental reserve. Engineer Farid Abi Younes, who started the campaign, pointed to the uniqueness of the area and the chance to develop it into a Mediterranean tourist attraction. Abi Younes had filed a lawsuit to stop the construction works of the private villa on lot 345, which is adjacent to the cave. The construction works that threaten the cave had stopped in order to study its environmental impact. The monk seal is the biggest seal of the Mediterranean, and is threatened with extinction. The Amchit seal cave is one of the specific locations on Mediterranean coasts that these seals go to in order to breed.
