"This is a complete farce. The United States is violating China’s sovereignty under the guise of so-called democracy." This was the Chinese Foreign Ministry's comment on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which began on Tuesday and ended today, Wednesday, as part of a broader tour of Asian countries. China, which hopes to return Taiwan under its control, considered Pelosi's trip as a challenge to its will and a violation of its "One China" principle. To attempt to thwart Pelosi's visit, China resorted to threats that began with Chinese President Xi Jinping warning his US counterpart not to "play with fire" and ended with live military drills in the Taiwan Straight. Tensions around the island re-emerged when Russia invaded Ukraine last February to "fight separatists," in a scenario similar to China-Taiwan.
